The project on Cotton Textile Industry of the Greater Songjiang Region from the Late Ming to the Mid-Qing is sponsored by a grant from the CCK Foundation. It deals with the development of cotton textile industry of the Greater Songjiang Region from the late Ming down to the mid Qing (1550-1800). By Greater Songjiang Region we refer to the major cotton textile production area of late imperial China, covering the three counties (Huating, Shanghai and Qingpu) of the Songjiang prefecture, Jiangsu, and the three counties originally belonged to the Suzhou prefecture, Jiangsu, namely, Jiading (the eastern part later sub-divided into the Zhenyang county), Kunshan (the northern part later sub-divided into the Xinyang county) and the Taicang sub-prefecture (later in the Yongzhen era obtained the status of independent sub-prefecture directly under the jurisdiction of the Jiangsu province), as well as the Pinghu and Jiashan counties of the Jiaxing prefecture, Zhejiang.
There are three major objectives for this project:
- To construct a micro-level database of Historical Geographic Information System (GIS) on the spatial structure of this industry;
- To reinterpret the economic performance of this cotton economy in the light of the newly constructed GIS database.
- To explore the institutional matrix of the cotton textile industry in the Greater Songjiang Region from 16th to 18th centuries.
In sum, this study built upon our former study "Cotton Textile Industry in Songjiangfu Region during the Late Ming Period" supported by a grant from the Research Grant Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China (Project No. CUHK 4020/02H). With an extended temporal and geographical framework, the current project is a multidisciplinary study combining socioeconomic history, local history, GIS, regional analysis, and new institutional economics with a view to generating new understanding of and research strategies towards China’s economic development, past and present.
The current website of "GIS Database of Cotton Textile Industry of the Greater Songjiang Region from the Late Ming to the mid-Qing" presents the GIS database outcome of this project.
